Title: Finding the sounds of my dreams: Peru & other short stories

Author and copyright: P.C. Romeijn

Summary: In this book of short stories, P.C. Romeijn takes us on a journey to the places, people and sounds of his dreams.

The stories cover a wide range of experiences, from the adventures and challenges of growing up in Asia, South America and Europe, to studying tropical forestry and exposing reforestation and teak wood investment scandals in Peru and Costa Rica. Along the way he reveals the intricate ways in which consumption of ‘white powder’ in Europe and elsewhere is linked to a web of interests and violence in South America. Throughout the book he introduces the reader to extraordinary encounters with North and South American Indians, as well as special places that can affect the quality of light and sound. Ultimately, the book describes the long road to a sound experience that the author had always been looking for; a meeting through which audio improvement - both live and reproduced - becomes a focal point for the rest of his life.

Title: Green Gold: on variations of truth in plantation forestry

Author and copyright: P.C. Romeijn

Summary: The “variations of truth in plantation forestry” is a study on the "Teakwood" investment program. Teakwood offered the general public in The Netherlands the opportunity to directly invest in a teak plantation in Costa Rica. The Teakwood investment program was introduced to the market as being based on solid and conservative assumptions on timber yield and financial return. The assumptions for the projected rates of return to investors of the Teakwood program and key statements on its certification were scrutinized in this study by a wide range of organizations and public bodies. This was accomplished by the publication of a series of annotated Teakwood pronouncements, or “variations of truth”, as Internet circulars to professionals worldwide, between January and July of 1996. These Internet circulars were found to produce an increasing pressure on the Teakwood contract partners and their associated organizations, much in analogy to a feedback loop in sound reproduction. Erosion of credibility of the justification for the projected rates of return and the forest management certificate was established in the course of the study. This confirms that the Internet, with the ease of worldwide communication it provides, has a role to play in working towards a ‘civil society’.
